VA - Whom the Moon a Nightsong Sings (2010)

I usually avoid VA albums but this is unmissable. WTMANS is a well compiled collection of neofolk and nordic ambient tracks. Quiet and primarily acoustic, perfect for mind voyages or OSTing Dark Souls or Elder Scrolls. Featured artists: Vàli, Nest, Empyrium, Nebelung, October Falls, Ainulindale, Les Discrets, Musk Ox, Havnatt, Dornenreich, Nhor, Ulver, Neun Welten, Tenhi, Bauda, Orplid, Nucleus Torn, Lonndom, Syven.

Celestial Bloodshed - Cursed, Scarred, and Forever Possessed (2008)

Grim and frostbitten epic True Norwegian Black Metal™. Your perfect companion in the bitter cold outdoors. Fantastic record from start to finish and rich in riffsosphere. Vocalist Steingrim Torson was allegedly accidentally shot by his best friend.

Aes Dana - Pollen (2012)

Fantastic loopy nighttime psybient. Perfect for studying/working, background and attentive listening, vibing, housepartying, fucking and pretty much at any setting and volume. This was my introduction to the wonderful discography of Aes Dana and I owe sharing it to YOU.

Toby Driver - Madonnawhore (2017)

A mastermind behind Kayo Dot, Maudlin of the Well, Asva and others, Toby Driver's Madonnawhore is a beautiful quiet journey of lush guitars and emotive vocals. Amazing album especially when it sinks in. Would highly recommend Toby Driver live as well.

Bardo Pond - Untitled (2018)

Bardo Pond's 2018 tour CD is a just-over one hour warped mind altering acid rock jam/song. Lot of things happen here at a beautiful pace that it only feels like 30 minutes. Space ventures, flute magick, drug infused guitars and other shenanigans blending acoustic and electric instrumentation.

Bardo Pond is one of the best bands ever. Buy their things.

Blown Out - Superior Venus (2017)

The latest full length from psychedelic cosmonauts Blown Out. Album originally includes two gnarly 15-minute long gravity-free space psych tracks, but this upload includes two 'powerdrive demos' of the main tracks. Members include Mike Vest (the mighty Bong, Melting Hand, 11Paranoias, and a bunch of other projects), Matthew Baty and Jean-Michel Hedley (both from Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, and Khunt). Furthermore, Blown Out blows minds live, go see them if you get the chance to.

Ron Carter - Empire Jazz (1980)

Ron Carter interpretations of John Williams' themes from The Empire Strikes Back, accompanied by a stellar line-up consisting of Jon Faddis, Joe Shepley, Eddie Bert, Hubert Law, Frank Wess, Bob James, Jay Berliner, Ralph MacDonald and Billy fucking Cobham. Quite a relaxing and easy-listening record.

Aura Noir - Black Thrash Attack (1996)

Blackened thrash from the unholy depths of Norway. While there's enough BM elements in here to make it black metal, thrash influence reigns supreme in homage to Celtic Frost, Slayer, Sodom and Teutonic thrash co. The One Who Smite is pretty much a cover of Proselyrism Real and Angel of Death (and that's a good thing).

Six Organs of Admittance - Nightly Trembling (1999)

Meditative experimental/free folk with haunting acoustic riffs and hypnotic chanting which gets into weird mantra folk jams at times. Because of stuff like this, I view SOAA to the folk realm what Om is to doom/stoner.

It is only necessary to destroying oneself the roots of those motives which determine a man's course, in order to enjoy the omnipotence and immunity of a god

Art Ensemble of Chicago - Les Stances A Sophie (1970)

Jazz avant-gardists Art Ensemble of Chicago's Les Stances A Sophie doesn't only serve as soundtrack to Moshe Mizrahi's French film of the same name, but also one of the greatest jazz records of all time. It's a record that highlights their varied skill and sonic sides (from the quieter and explorative tracks, to the more bizarre and just plain badass freakouts). If you can't admire those licks, grooves and freakouts on Theme de Yoyo, fuck you.

Bo Hansson - Music Inspired By The Lord of the Rings (1970)

A highly recommended true 70's psychedelic instrumental gem. As the title suggests, the music is inspired by Tolkien's LOTR. Bo claimed that he wanted to use a variety of instruments such as harp, string sections and other exotic sounds but his lack of finances resulted in him sticking to his keyboards, synths, guitar and bass, accompanied by guest artists' drums, saxophone and flute. Fortunately, it turned out the flawless and colourfully creative way it is. Jimi Hendrix even took out time from his tour to jam with Bo, and was rumored to have wanted to record music with him but unfortunately Jimi had to join the 27 club. Just listen to it.

Voqkrre - Malveillance (2008)

Voqkrre is obscure, depressive, and most importantly, riffy black metal from the murky depths of France. There's some serious entrancing bleak riffs going on in this little demo. Can't go wrong with a band name that sounds like you're choking on your own vomit.

Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase (2005)

The Campfire Headphase is the third full-length by Boards of Canada. This album makes use of lo-fi acoustics and reduces the focus on synthesization featured on previous records. Michael Sandison, one of the two members, says about the album "we were picturing this character losing his mind at the campfire and compressing weeks of events into a few hours, in that time-stretching way that acid fucks with your perception."

Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper (2017)

Just as with the previous two releases, Bell Witch continues to leave its mark on funeral doom with their third output. Mirror Reaper is an outstanding, epic journey of monolithic doom and desolation. Spanning at 83 minutes, it's difficult not to let the listener's mind wander off, but it's part of the charm to get lost in the void to this soundtrack. Go to their shows, buy their music, merch.

Rökkurró ‎– Í Annan Heim (2010)

Rökkurró's melancholic serenades are evocative of the cold and desolate landscapes of their distant homeland, Iceland. Mesmerising tones and swooping strings projected against a bleak and solitary Nordic backdrop. And yet, unique warmth prevades Rökkurró's music owed to the fragile and soothing voice of Hildur Kristin Stefansdottir. Í Annan Heim is a collection of nine graceful compositions that showcase a darker, more expansive and mature sound, full of leticulously crafted melodies, complex arrangements and smooth sonic textures. Produced by Alex Somers, partner and music collaborator of Jónsi Birgisson (Sigur Rós).

Witches Moon - The Womb of Those Whom Fall From Heaven (2018)

Beautiful, haunting and gentle dungeon synth worthy of repeated listens. I don't know much about Witches Moon much other than that it's composed by one person, he's from North Carolina, fucks with black metal and goes by the name The Witch. Check out the rest of their stuff on bandcamp.

Bunny Wailer - Rock 'n' Groove (1981)

I know I might be posting too much reggae but fuck it. Bunny Wailer was one of the founders of The Wailers along with Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, on percussion and vocal duties. Mellow-out reggae for the soul with something to love in every track.

Jeffrey Lewis - The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane (2001)

Comic book and anti-folk artist Jeffrey Lewis' debut. Laid back, lyrically focused and memorable folk tunes from a relateable worldview.

The United States of America - The United States of America (1968)

Far-out ahead of its time psychedelic rock from 1968 (actually recorded in '67 and released in '68). If I had to compile experimental rock from the 60's, the United States of America would definitely be among. Unfortunately after this release, the band broke up due to conflicting directions the band members wanted to take. After the break-up, Joe Byrd went on to form the also incredible Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies. An absolute gem for classic rock lurkers.

Blasphemous Crucifixion - Crude Burial (2009)

Unholy raw black metal. Simple riffs, blasphemy and a handful of punk'd up tracks. What's not to love? Underrated gem that I'm glad I have in my life, and you should too.

Six Organs of Admittance - School of the Flower (2005)

A relaxing dosage of psych folk. Primarily instrumental and acoustic but sometimes resorts to gentle vocals, background ambiance and electric freakouts. Also includes a sweet cover of Gary Higgins' Thicker Than a Smokey. One of the first albums I heard from SOOA's flawless discography.

Above all, there was fear. Fear of today, fear of tomorrow, fear of our neighbors, and fear of ourselves.

Jessica Moss - Pools of Light (2017)

Jessica Moss is also known for playing violin and backing vocals  with A Silver Mt. Zion. Her solo work is contemporary classical built on loops on top of loops of violin, yielding an effective epic and melancholic result.  I saw her open for Godspeed You! Black Emperor and she noted that this album is about the refugees and masses who were/are daily forced to flee their war-torn home countries.

Nurse With Wound - Dark Fat (2016)

Weird outsider music to get lost in the void to. If you think I'm gonna describe the sound of this album, good luck - it's just as warped as the album's aesthetics.

Man those live visuals were something.

We therefore changed our magical procedure. We went far out from the city into a hollow among the dunes. There we made a circle to protect the scribe and a triangle wherein the Abyss might manifest sensibly. We killed three pigeons, one at each Angle, that their blood might be a basis whereon the forces of evil might build themselves bodies. The name of the Dweller in the Abyss is Choronzon, but he is not really an individual. The Abyss is empty of being; it is filled with all possible forms, each equally inane, each therefore evil in the only true sense of the word --- that is, meaningless but malignant, in so far as it craves to become real. These forms swirl senselessly into haphazard heaps like dust devils, and each such chance aggregation asserts itself to be an individual and shrieks, "I am I!" though aware all the time that its elements have no true bond; so that the slightest disturbance dissipates the delusion just as a horseman, meeting a dust devil, brings it in showers of sand to the earth.  Choronzon appeared in many physical forms to Omnia Vincam, while I abode apart in my magical robe with its hood drawn over my face. He took the form of myself, of a woman whom Neuburg loved, of a serpent with a human head, etc. He could not utter the word of the Abyss, because there is no word; its voice is the insane babble of a multitude of senseless ejaculations; yet each form spake and and acted as if aping its model. His main object was to induce O.V. to leave the circle, or to break into it; so as to obsess him, to live in his life. O.V. had many narrow escapes, and once Choronzon made a long speech at a great pace to keep O.V. so busy writing it down that he would not notice that sand was being thrown from the Triangle so as to obliterate the Circle. The torrent of obscene blasphemy was beyond his power to keep up, concentration being impossible. It became an incoherent series of cries; then suddenly, perhaps catching the idea from O.V.'s mind, the demon began to recite Tom o"Bedlam.  There was now a gap in the Circle; and Choronzon, in the form of a naked savage, dashed through and attacked O.V. He flung him to the earth and tried to tear out his throat with froth-covered fangs. O.V. invoked the names of God and struck at Choronzon with the Magical Dagger. The demon was cowed by this courageous conduct and writhed back into the Triangle. O.V. then repaired the Circle; Choronzon resumed his ravings, but could not continue. He changed once more into the form of the woman whom O.V. loved, and exercised every seduction. O.V. stuck to his guns and the dialogue took other forms. He tried to shake O.V.'s faith in himself, his respect for me, his belief in the reality of Magick, and so on. At last all the energy latent in the blood of the pigeons was exhausted by the successive phantoms, so that it was no longer able to give form to the forces evoked. The Triangle was empty.  During all this time I had astrally identified myself with Choronzon, so that I experienced each anguish, each rage, each despair, each insane outburst. My ordeal ended as the last form faded; so, knowing that all was over, I wrote the holy name of BABALON in the sand with my magical ring and arose from my trance. We lit a great fire to purify the place and destroyed the Circle and Triangle. The work had lasted over two hours and we were both utterly exhausted, physically and in every other way. I hardly know how we ever got back to Bou Saâda.

Earth - Extra-Capsular Extraction (1991)

Colossal crushing drones from pioneers Earth. This EP features the prolific Joe Preston on bass and drums, Dave Harwell on another bass, and of course Dylan Carlson on guitar and magick. Get absorbed, if you're ready.

Boris - Feedbacker (2003)

One of eclectics Boris' best outputs. Self-descriptive Feedbacker (aka Boris at Last) is a 42-minute journey divided into 5 parts. Beautifully flowed album with a lot to hear in. There's mandatory crushing drones and slow riffery, psychedelic-tinged doom, noise and occasional vocal and stoner work. Given the guitar tones of this album, this is some shit to get lost in.
