Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway (2006)

Holy shit, what can I say about this? In 2006 Cult of Luna released this monumental post-metal/atmospheric sludge metal album. This might very well be my favourite post-metal album, let alone being among the best metal albums of all time in my book. It's the kind of album that when I feel like listening to a particular song off it, I can't help but continue all of it, though I usually always start it from the start. A deep, self-contemplative emotional trip parallel to a religious experience which I highly recommend to everyone to experience, whether you like metal or not.

I was spoiled enough to witness them resurrect this masterpiece to life at Roadburn 2016. It was the very first band at the four-day festival - after finishing the set, I was so shaken, and thinking "Now what? I could go home happy now." It was life-shattering to say the least.

According to guitarist Erik Olofsson, SATH is about "Male loneliness - I was very inspired by a book by J.M. Coetzee [Life & Times of Michael K] about a man in South Africa with a hare lip. [The character] escapes from everything and lives off the earth eating only pumpkings. Johannes Persson [guitar, vocals, lyrics] had similar ideas for the lyrics about loneliness, it has a countryside vibe to it." The latter is further highlighted by banjo in some moments. If you missed it in the first paragraph, I highly recommend this.

Let me dream if only for tonight, that we leave together in the first morning light.
Alone and forgotten. I bow my head in shame.
Before you all answers reveal. So I sink my sorrows in the sea.

Healer - HigherGrounds (2004)

Lovingly pinched from Ektoplazm:

'HigherGrounds is the second full-length release by Healer, the downtempo and ambient project of Swedish producer Michael Andresen. Originally released in 2004, this lightly mixed album is an elegant example of soothing melodic downtempo filled with evolving soundscapes and deep, luxurious rhythms.'

Les Claypool's Duo De Twang - Four Foot Shack (2014)

Claypool needs no introduction, and if the name doesn't ring a bell to you, maybe today is your lucky day because this album is a great vehicle to familiarize with the bass wizard. Four Foot Shack is an acoustic bass country/hillbilly/americana album with bluegrass tinges. The album contains one original and fourteen covers, although most of the 'covers' are Claypool and Primus songs.

Impulse Manslaughter - He Who Laughs Last... Laughs Alone (1987)

When I started getting into metal and punk, I discovered and got into this one at about 13 on a blog. Since then, it had remained among my favourite crossover releases. I never recall anyone really mentioning or talking about it after discovering it, online or irl. Recently I found a physical of this and my jaw literally dropped. A few days ago I fucking acquired it and to make it sassier it was a sexyass green vinyl. So I'm celebrating the occasion of having it (and christmas) by sharing this gnarly kickass crossover thrash gem with you. Enjoy!

Jessica Pratt - On Your Own Love Again (2015)

I don't remember how this one slipped into my library but I checked it out a few days ago and I'm enjoying it more everyday. Contemporary acoustic folk with soft vocals. Great tracks throughout and nice to mellow out to in winter.

Nuclear Devastation - Inferno (2016)

Amsterdam-based motorcharged thrash/death/black metal crust. Relentless riffing, shreds and remorseless drumming that'll obliterate your ass to oblivion, with occasional sludgy/doom moments. May be my favourite band from the Netherlands, at least among the currently active ones. Fans of Black Breath would dig. Fucking great live too.

Dead Can Dance - Dance Can Dance (1984)

God-tier ethereal post-punk / darkwave complimented by contagious melodies, tasty riffs, Lisa Gerrard's soulful (Frontier, Musica Eterna), sometimes-demented (Ocean), but nevertheless far-out vocals, and Brendan Perry's magick. Highly recommended. I hope someone gets into DCD and the immersive world of their music through this post. If you've got recommendations based on this album, feel free to drop a comment!

Brand X - Morrocan Roll (1977)

Jazz fusion that's sometimes lumped with progressive rock from the UK. Been previously familiar with Unorthodox Behaviour (which I highly recommend) until I found this at the record store and it's been getting daily spins from me almost everyday I work there - and I always get asked 'what's playing?' so you know it's good. This record also features some slick sitar on some tracks. Overall masterful and inspired instrumentation. If you're into instrument porn, then you should hear this. I mean it's jazz fusion from 77, cmon.

Why should I lend you mine when you've already broken yours?

Ulver - The Assassination of Julius Ceaser (2017)

Norwegian eclectics' (second) latest release of 2017. Definitely one of my favourites of the year. There's obvious Depeche Mode worship here, but like it's always the case with Ulver, they manage to craft their own unique sound. The combination of the songs with the theme and atmosphere of the album is contagious. Sometimes deliciously unexpected - such as the rave-fit in So Falls the World (grrrreat song btw). Had the privilege to see them do this album live twice this year. I love Ulver. You should too.

how beautifully catchy is this?

The Bug vs Earth - Concrete Desert (2017)

One of the best albums of the year, and might possibly be my favourite. This album's gotten so many listens from me. Amazing collaboration between Dylan Carlson and Kevin Martin aka The Bug (who's been involved with projects with Justin Broadrick like Techno Animal, Ice, God, among others such as King Midas Sound, etc.). Broken dub and occasionally industrial beats emerging from haunted guitar riffs from the drone metal pioneer himself. Also contains two mean versions of tracks mixed with Justin Broadrick's vocals. I got the privilege to see these guys twice this year. Addictive album, also great to immerse into when you're traveling through crowded public transport, bumping into all those people yet everyone's feeling disconnected from everyone, everything. Highly recommended.

Pilgrim - II: Void Worship (2014)

Sad news, sad day. Jon 'The Wizard' Rossi - guitarist, singer and songwriter of Pilgrim - died and this totally sucks. He died at 26 (didn't even make it to the 27 club). For this, I'm listening to Pilgrim today in memory, and sharing a DLable for their latest/last album, which in my opinion was one of the best albums to be released in 2014.

Pilgrim is a young doom metal band that plays in the style of the mighty Reverend Bizarre, and they do it well. They've only been around since 2010/2011, and I've always wished for more material from these guys. A successor contender for the Reverend Bizarre, but with their own twist to the sound. This would also appeal to fans of Hammers of Misfortune.

Rest in Power Jon Rossi, your doom will live on.

Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways (1995)

One of Porcupine Tree's best outputs. Epic spacey progressive rock with influences from Klaus Schultz, Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream. The songs are amazing here. The Sky Moves Sideways is easily among the band's best tracks (both parts). Semi-melancholic feel is heard throughout. Dislocated Day's oppressive riffing introduces doom vibe, another highlight from the band's catalog. If I could upload a joint, I would. Highly recommended.

I will find a way to make you say the name of your forgiver

Reverend Gary Davis - Blues & Ragtime (1993)

Blind since infancy and having had led a difficult life, Reverend Gary Davis outthugs about any gangsta rapper and satanic black metal band from Scandinavia. A collection of Reverend Gary Davis songs recorded at different locations between 1962 and 1966. One of my go-to delta blues releases to play at any occasion.

Sunn O))) - Agharti Live 09-10 (2011)

Hallucinatory live take on Sunn O)))'s Monoliths and Dimensions. It works as a different album though, it's not a copycat. Accompanied by voidfucking vocals of Attila Csihar, Aghartha is broken into two tracks. The first half is sweet droning drones, the second one features some of Attila's best recorded moments. Hunting and Gathering (here H&G Foraging) is crushingly heavy, and of course it's played slower! If you like Monoliths and Dimensions, drone or you are an admirer of adventurous vocals, you should listen to this.

Yehudi Menuhin · Ravi Shankar · Jean-Pierre Rampal - Improvisations - West Meets East 3 (1976)

One of the best things ever recorded. Ravi Shankar on sitar, Yehudi Menuhin on violin, Jean-Pierre Rampal on flute, accompanied by harp, tambura, and tabla (amazingly played by Alla Rakha). The tabla work is particularly masterful virtuoso alongside the front men. Not to mention 'Morning Love' having one of the best melodies and riffs ever. Highly recommended.

Bathory - The Return...... (1985)

Fuck yeah Bathory's second full-length is full of bangers. Venom, blasphemy, black metal, goat worship, (bestial) lust and sleeze. Absolutely essential.

Pole - 3 (2000)

Stefan Betke aka Pole hails from Dusseldorf, Germany. His albums in general dabble in healthy balance of ambient dub techno with a minimal approach. Pole puts some extra focus on the dub element in this 2000 release. Some eerie vibes thrown in too. If you like glitch, bleeps and ticks in a dub/ambient context, or just looking for music to work/study/do shit to, give this a try.

Never knew of dodging backrooms over powder. This uninvited company and I. Only in the sleepless freakshows seX entertainment if so I partied anonymous. Change could start my sleep. A lonely care, but inevitable. Thus would bills, stripclubs & strangers. I could grave pills. On every streetcorner I did them.
